Homeschool Christmas Crafts: Homemade Cinnamon Ornaments!

The best part of homeschooling is that everything can be turned into a lesson. Yes and amen. Children are naturally curious which makes teaching them easy. These homemade cinnamon ornaments can serve the dual purpose of homeschool and Christmas crafts. We large family mamas are always multitasking. Hop over to my homeschool playlist on Youtube to see what homeschooling looks like in our large family. You can also read through my years of homeschool encouragement posts here on the blog.

Making these ornaments will warm up your home both in memories and heat since they have to hang out in a 200 degree oven for 2 and a half hours. Believe me when I say your house will smell amazing! It’s a super easy recipe too.

Mix the applesauce and cinnamon together to form a clay like dough. Put dough between two sheets of wax paper and roll out to desired thickness. We have found 1/2 inch to be great. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters. Make a hole in the top using a straw or bamboo skewer BEFORE baking. Don’t ask me how I know that little tidbit.

Want to make a new homeschool Christmas traditions? These homemade cinnamon ornaments will make your home festive and smell amazing!

  • ¾ cup applesauce
  • 1 ¼ cup ground cinnamon
  • Waxed paper
  • Cookie cutters
  • Straw or bamboo skewer
  • Ribbon for hanging

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a bowl, mix together applesauce and cinnamon to form a clay-like dough.

  3. Roll out dough between sheets of waxed paper to about ½ inch thick. Cut using cookie cutters. Using a straw or bamboo skewer, create a hole for hanging the ornament.

  4. Transfer ornaments to baking sheet. Bake for 2 ½ hours. Remove from oven and place ornaments in a cooling rack.

  5. Allow ornaments to dry on the cooling rack for 24 to 48 hours, turning occasionally.

  6. Add a ribbon to ornaments for hanging or to attach to packages.

Bake at 200 degrees for 2 and a half hours. Remove from oven to cooling rack for 24 – 48 hours or until completely dry. Be sure to turn occasionally. You can put string in them to hang on the tree or a package. Alternately, you could have the kids paint them first then put them on the tree or package. Don’t forget to have the kids paint their name on the back of one or two with the date. You will love looking back at them.
