Easy Homemade Laundry Detergent

Four years ago I realized that I could save my family over $300 per year by giving homemade laundry detergent a try. It was a big hit. Now we make a 10-gallon batch every 3-4 months.  You can see that my helpers think making homemade laundry detergent is fun too. 😉

Cost Savings:

Annually making homemade laundry detergent costs me around $10. I usually buy the items I need at Wal-mart. If you can’t find what you need at Wal-mart the product links are below for ordering on Amazon.

 Homemade Laundry Detergent

My children love to help me make homemade laundry detergent. My older sons help grate the soap and stir the hot water on the stove. My younger children like to help stir the mixture once it’s in the bucket. However, the mixture is extremely hot. Use your best judgement if you choose to have your children help you make this recipe.

Easy Homemade Laundry Detergent::Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons

Description

I have saved my family well over $1,000 by making homemade laundry detergent for the last 4 years. Here is my tried and true recipe for your money saving and clean laundry pleasure.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1 cup Super Washing Soda
  • 1 Bar Fels-Naptha Laundry Bar Soap
  • {or your favorite soap…Ivory, Zote, etc}

Instructions

  1. – Grate a bar of soap onto a plate with a cheese grater. Then add all the shavings to pot of water on the stove. Stir continually over medium heat until your soap fully dissolves.
  2. – Next, fill a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full of hot water from the sink. Then add in your melted soap from the pot on the stove, plus Borax, and washing soda.
  3. Stir well until all powder is dissolved {My kids love to help me stir. Use extreme caution though b/c it’s boiling hot!}
  4. Fill the remaining space in the bucket to top with additional hot water from the sink. Stir all the ingredients in the bucket well.
  5. Fill an empty laundry jug ½ full with the result of this concentrated recipe. Next, fill the remaining space in your laundry jug with water. This recipe will gel. Shake before each use. (will gel)
  6. -Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

Does this recipe REALLY get your clothes clean?

I’ll answer that by a quick look at our daily life. My husband has one of those “dirty jobs” that leaves his clothing filthy. Our home is in the country with a huge pond, tire swings, and zip line. Our kids play hard. Did I mention that we have six children?  4 of whom are boys who are all boy. Then we have a daughter who makes mud pies – daily. And we also have a newborn and all the sweet stains that come from that stage of life.  Oh, and three of our children are ages three and under. I say all that to answer emphatically YES this recipe gets our clothing clean.
