I may be the only mom on earth who at times (daily) acts unbecomingly.

{I know, it’s a cow}

When I act like a child I can rest assured that my children see me.

And Jesus sees me.

Even when I hold it together on the outside, He still sees my heart. There’s no hiding with Him.

Then I read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.  I’m always convicted when I read that passage of scripture. I take in how love should act. You know, God is Love – we are created by Him, in His image. Sigh, I guess I’m supposed to act like love?

Let’s break this down just a little…

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 [a]bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NASB)

and for the KJV readers

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (KJV)

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

and my personal favorite version – The Amplified Bible

Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].

It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.

Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].

So here I am; completely ripped open by the Word – the double-edged sword, how it should be.  Many times I’m none of these things. I don’t endure long or patiently.  And I’m pretty sure that I boiled over with jealousy just a few days ago.

Where does this leave me?  I’m a Momma in need of Grace, and I need more of Jesus.

In Sink Prayers I talk a lot about Moms speaking God’s Word out loud and making it personal. Here’s how I do that for 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

I endure long and am patient and kind; I am never envious nor boil over with jealousy, I am not boastful or vainglorious, I do not display myself haughtily.

I am not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); I am not rude (unmannerly) and I do not act unbecomingly. Because God’s love is in me, I do not insist on mine own rights or my own way, for I am not self-seeking; I am not touchy or fretful or resentful; I take no account of the evil done to me [I pays no attention to a suffered wrong].

It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.

I do not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but I rejoice when right and truth prevail.

Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].

I bear up under anything and everything that comes, I am ever ready to believe the best of every person, my hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and I endure everything [without weakening].
