What is a Denver Omelet Casserole?
Some of you have never heard of a Denver Omelet and that’s okay. A Denver Omelet is something special around here because it’s simple. Rumor has it that this dish started way back in the 19th century with cattle drivers. The omelet was originally served on a sandwich and eventually went to just a plain omelet. The really cool part of this dish is that it’s served as a casserole. Casseroles are well known for serving large amounts of people! You can enjoy this casserole for breakfast, or you can be like us and eat it for dinner!!
Difference Between an Omelet and an Omelette
You might be looking at the spelling of both of these words and not even think there is a major difference. You are actually right. The only major difference between an omelet and an omelette is that omelet is the english spelling and Omelette is the french spelling. I bet both taste just as equally delicious!
Ingredients of This Omelet Casserole, Denver Style
Let’s be honest, every person that makes an omelet is going to have a different take on it. I wanted to share some of my favorite ingredients in this dish that make it such an awesome dish!
Eggs – I’m sorry but there isn’t an ingredient that is cheaper or easier to work with than an egg. With this recipe, you’re going to need a dozen eggs. If you can, buy them on sale and then make this dish, it’ll make it even cheaper.
Cooked Ham – Even when you’re feeding large groups of people, you need some type of protein. Because this is a Denver Omelet Casserole, it only makes sense to use ham. You can’t have a Denver style omelet without Ham.
Heavy Cream – I love using heavy cream in my meals because it adds so much creaminess. Plus, since you’re making a casserole, you’ll enjoy the thickness this brings to the dish.
How to Make a Denver Omelet Casserole
I promise you this is one of the easiest casseroles you’re ever going to make. I can’t ever get enough of the flavor of a Denver omelet. Even if you have picky eaters, they will fall in love with this dish! Here is how to make a Denver Omelet Casserole.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a deep 9×13 or an 11×18 casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, sauteing for about 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Stir in the ham and heat through. Transfer to the casserole dish. Top with cheese.
- Whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, onion powder, salt and pepper until completely blended. Pour over the cheese, ham, and vegetables.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes (depending on how deep your casserole is) or until the center is cooked through and the edges are starting to brown.
How to Freeze a Casserole
If you’re going to freeze a casserole, it’s important to let it cool down first. I also invest in some reusable inexpensive freezer pans that I can store a whole casserole in. If you’re going to make one of these casseroles, you might as well have two. Then, you don’t have to worry about breakfast or breakfast for dinner some other night.
