Large Family Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

Large Family Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls are the perfect snack, and just the thing for your large table gathering. Making bread can be almost therapeutic. From the kneading of the dough, to the smell when these rolls come our of the oven, baking can be a great way to relax. Fresh, home made bread- It’s Love straight from the oven!

These Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls are the perfect side dish to have with soup, appetizer. Grab your little ones and see if they want to help with the kneading, or maybe even in rolling the dough balls prior to the first rise. This recipe can be enjoyed by your entire family from start to finish.

What’s in Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls?

  • Active dry yeast
  • Sugar
  • Vegetable shortening or Coconut oil
  • Salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • Whole wheat flour
  • All-purpose flour
  • Melted Butter

How to Make Large Family Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Allow the mixture to rest for 8 to 10 minutes or until a frothy layer has formed on top. The froth is showing that your yeast has “activated”, that’s why the temperature of the water is important. If the water is too warm, then it can actually stop the yeast from rising.

Next, to your yeast water add the remaining sugar, shortening, salt, eggs, and whole wheat flour. Beat until well blended.

Now switch to a dough hook and begin adding the all-purpose flour about ½ cup at a time until a soft dough has formed. You’ll need to add a bit at a time in order to ensure that it’s blended well without any clumps. Continue kneading with the dough hook for 8 to 10 minutes. This makes certain that the gluten within the flour is being activated and stretched, which gives you fluffier bread.

Turn the dough out into a lightly greased bowl. Cover loosely and place in a draft-free location to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour. Then punch the dough down and transfer to a lightly floured surface. To punch the dough, you simply make a slight fist and press the risen dough in the middle. This releases the everything and makes the dough fall. Kids love to watch this part!

Now divide the dough into four equal pieces. Then, divide each piece into 12 pieces. Roll into balls and place on parchment lined baking sheets. Once all of the rolls are on the baking sheets, cover loosely again and allow them to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour. You’ll need to preheat your oven to 375 degrees while the rolls are rising this second time.

Bake the rolls for 13 to 15 minutes. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and brush the rolls with the melted butter. That’s it! And your house will smell so yummy! Serve warm.

How to Freeze Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

These are freeze-able? You bet! You can make as many as you’d like and keep them in the freezer for just the perfect time. After you have made your Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls, it’s super easy to freeze them for later.

  • Wrap about 3-4 rolls in plastic wrap.
  • Then wrap the rolls in tin foil. 
  • When you double wrap the rolls, this makes sure that they stay fresh for as long as possible. 
  • Go ahead and slice the rolls (if you choose) before you freeze them. This lets you use them as mini sandwich buns later.

Large Family Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

Ingredients

4 teaspoons active dry yeast

2 ¼ cups water, warmed to 110 degrees to 115 degrees

½ cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar, divided

¼ cup vegetable shortening or coconut oil

2 teaspoons salt

2 large eggs, room temperature

3 cups whole wheat flour

3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour

¼ cup butter, melted
