What You Need to Have to Start Making the Large Family Make-Ahead Cheesy Ham and Pasta Casserole

Before you put the Large Family Make-Ahead Cheesy Ham and Pasta Casserole together, you need to make sure you have the right ingredients, such as:

  • Cubed Cooked Ham. Chop cooked ham into small cubes before mixing it with other ingredients to create this casserole dish.
  • Rotini Pasta. Although this recipe calls for rotini pasta, which is a great choice, you can select any pasta you prefer to use.
  • Frozen Mixed Vegetables. Use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables to add a slight crunch to the dish while making it even healthier.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese. Add plenty of shredded cheddar cheese to the dish to make it cheesier.
  • Sour Cream. Using sour cream with the cheese and other vegetables helps create a creamier casserole that never tastes dry.
  • French Fried Onions. The french fried onions go on top and create the perfect crunch that goes with the meal.

The ingredients mentioned above and a few others, such as dry mustard powder, paprika, butter, and minced garlic, will help you create this delicious casserole with ease.

How to Easily Store and Freeze the Make-Ahead Cheesy Ham and Pasta Casserole

Make this meal in advance on your day off and freeze it to bake later in the week or at another time in the future. You may prepare the Make-Ahead Cheesy Ham and Pasta Casserole a few days or weeks before baking it.

Prepare it as you typically would but do not add the french fried onions to it. Add foil to your casserole dish, seal it tightly, and place your casserole in the fridge for up to three days or the freezer for up to six months.

You should thaw it out in your fridge for a few hours after removing it from the freezer and then add the french fried onions to it before baking.

    Description

Prepare an easy dish that will feed everyone in the home with this Large Family Make-Ahead Cheesy Ham and Pasta Casserole recipe. It combines cheese, ham, and other great ingredients to provide a comforting meal. You can also make this into a wonderful large family freezer meal.

    Ingredients

    • 2 (16 ounce) boxes rotini pasta
    • 3 to 4 cups cooked ham, cubed
    • 6 tablespoons butter
    • 1 cup onion, diced
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
    • ¼ cup flour
    • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • Salt, to taste
    • 4 cups milk
    • 1 cup sour cream
    • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
    • 2 cups french fried onions

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare two 9×13 casserole dishes with nonstick cooking spray.

    2. Cook pasta according to package directions and drain well.

    3. In a large (12 inch) skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add the onions. Cook the onions until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and mixed vegetables.

    4. Add the flour and seasonings to the skillet and stir until the flour coats everything, cooking for an additional 2 minutes.

    5. Gradually add in the milk, whisking until thick and bubbly.

    6. Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in the sour cream and half of the cheddar cheese until melted.

    7. In a 30 quart bowl, combine the pasta, ham, and cheese sauce.  Divide the mixture between the prepared casserole dishes.

    8. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.

    9. Bake the casseroles for 40 to 45 minutes or until the edges are bubbling.

    10. Temporarily remove the casseroles from the oven and add a layer of french fried onions. Return to the oven and cook for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until the onions are crispy.

    To make ahead:

    1. Prepare casseroles as directed but do not top with french fried onions.

    2. Cover tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 6 months.

    3. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator overnight prior to baking.

    4. Uncover and proceed according to directions.
