Homesteading Heirloom Garden Seed Haul 2023
Mr. Travis finished installing our new grow lights to start seeds in our basement!! In this video, you’ll see a peek at our grow light set up so far! PLUS we go through all the heirloom garden seeds that I ordered from Seeds for Generations, MIGardener, and Baker Creek Seeds!
I’m no Heirloom Gardening Expert…Yet!!
Back at our old forest house, we were able to have several successful gardening years. When we moved into this house in 2020, I thought we were going to be awesome gardeners because we had experience, right?!
Wrong…this property hadn’t been used for gardening before so the soil and lighting were really not suited for gardening. Sadly, my plants didn’t grow well. I was growing Baby Tobin that year so I was okay with just focusing my energy on that. Fast forward through the craziness which was 2021 and through 2022 where we had some success with pumpkins and raised beds. I learned about some fungal issues, how to best water plants, and tons more. Now here we are in 2023 and I am READY to do this mega momma homestead gardening adventure for real. I’m hopeful for our 2023 Homestead Garden Plans!
As I said, Mr. Travis wired grow lights and heat pads for us to start our heirloom seeds inside since we are in a zone that has frosts until around Mother’s Day. I’ll give you a sneak peek of this set up and also share with you what I got from my heirloom garden seed haul. Make plans with me for our homestead garden!!
I’m not a gardening expert, but I’ve done lots of research and have lots of friends who are amazing resources for me as I learn this new(ish) skill. You know that I only know mega & lots, so I’m just jumping head first into this and I have a good feeling about this!!

Shannon and Jason at Seeds for Generations are some good friends of mine. They’ve been around for about a decade or so and they do a lot of “Back to Eden” gardening with wood chips. {I am really loving the idea of wood chips this year!!} From their site, I bought everything they had available. Here are just some of the wonderful seeds they offer: carrots, cucumbers, radishes, peas, bell peppers, tomatoes of all shapes and sizes, melons, pumpkins & squash! I also grabbed mega & lots of herbs and flowers that I’m really excited about!

Baker Creek Seeds had some great beans, flowers, several kinds of peppers, beautiful squash, and three different kinds of tomatillos. I’ve never done tomatillos before but I’m looking forward to trying them out!!
The MIGardener seeds were super affordable! I bought squash and several kinds of peppers including one I thought was particularly interesting–chocolate beauty! We found lots of gorgeous flowers like dahlias, snapdragons, carnations, sunflowers, and more! And because we just love our monarchs, we also had to get milkweed!! I ordered some fertilizer, a garden planner, and some books from them as well!
