What You Need to Bake Slow Cooker Bread
ANY bread recipe should work in the slow cooker, but this is the recipe I tested and it totally worked.
- Warm Water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 ½ to 4 cups all purpose flour
How to Make Your Slow Cooker Bread
You’ll start by preparing your slow cooker. Do this by first lining your slow cooker with parchment paper. Press it down into the bottom and sides. This will help with the rise and shape of your dough later on. Cover with the lid and turn the cooker onto high heat.
Take your stand mixer and add the warm water, sugar, and yeast. I suggest your water temperature be approximately 110 degrees. Think of it this way: your body temperature is about 98 degrees, so warm to you is about the temperature you need for your bread. Using a hand whisk, gently combine and then allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes or until the top has a layer of thick foam.
Next you’ll begin with your paddle mixer attachment, and add the salt and 3 cups of flour to the yeast water and mix until combined. This particular recipe calls for all purpose flour, but you can use other bread flours. Just keep in mind that each type of flour will bake up slightly differently. Switch to the dough hook and continue mixing, adding flour a little at a time, until a soft dough forms that pulls away from the sides. Continue using the dough hook to knead the bread dough for 5 to 8 minutes on medium-high speed.
Now you remove the dough from the mixing bowl and place on a lightly floured surface. Knead in just enough flour that the dough is no longer sticky. Fold the dough up and place the seam side down in the slow cooker. Then cover and cook on high for 2 hours or until the internal temperature of the bread reaches 190 degrees.
Your bread is now done! It is soft and wonderful with butter. Yum! However, you might want a crispy crust. If you want that Artisan Bread crunchy crust, preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Lift the bread using the parchment paper and transfer to a baking sheet. Heat for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned on the outside.
