What You’ll Need to Prepare the Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup
Gather these important ingredients together if you’d like to make the flavorful Large Family Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup:
- Ham Bone. When selecting the ham bone for this soup, make sure it’s a meaty one.
- Onion. Chop and dice your onion into small pieces before you toss it into the slow cooker
- Carrots. You’ll need to peel and dice two large carrots for this recipe.
- Dried Great Northern Beans. Rinse your beans and drain them before you use them.
- Broth. Use chicken broth or vegetable broth to create a base for your soup.
You’re only going to need a few other ingredients, such as diced celery, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and bay leaves.
Which broth is best to use?
You can use chicken broth or vegetable broth. Both variations will contribute to the flavor of this Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup. You can also use a low-sodium version
Can I use canned beans instead of dry beans?
When you’re making this soup, you need to use dry beans. They’re going to soak in the broth and cook for several hours, ultimately reaching the ideal consistency. If you use canned beans, they’ll likely become too mushy to enjoy them.
How long do I need to cook the soup in my slow cooker?
After you add all the ingredients, place the lid on your slow cooker, set it to low, and allow everything to cook for eight hours. Check the beans when they’re still in the slow cooker to make sure they’re tender before you begin serving the soup to your loved ones.
What can I serve with the soup?
You can eat the soup as an appetizer or have it for lunch or dinner. If you’re not sure what to serve it with, consider adding some crackers to the soup or a side of French bread with butter spread on it. If you serve it with homemade bread, you can dip the bread into the soup. It will taste so good!
