The Ingredients to Make Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake

Prepare the Big Family Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake using these ingredients:

  • All Purpose Flour. Start with the flour to create the batter for your cake.
  • Apple Pie Spice. Enhance the taste of your cake using apple pie spice.
  • Brown Sugar. Make sure your cake is perfectly sweet by adding brown sugar to the mix.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce. Adding homemade applesauce gives the cake more flavor and leaves it moist.
  • Walnuts. Chop your walnuts before adding them to your cake batter.
  • Golden Raisins. You’ll need a cup of golden raisins for this recipe.

Along with these essential ingredients, you’ll need a few others, such as baking powder, baking soda, unsalted butter, traditional sugar, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract.

Do I Have to Use Chopped Walnuts?

The chopped walnuts add more texture to the recipe. They offer a slight with each crunch that goes well with the flavor of the cake. If you’re not a fan of walnuts, you can use other types of chopped nuts, such as chopped peanuts or chopped pecans.

Can I Use Any Raisins in the Recipe?

Golden raisins taste great with this homemade traditional cake. If you don’t have golden raisins, you can use a different type of raisins to give this cake more flavor and texture. If you don’t like raisins, you can leave them out of the cake or even replace them with craisins.

Can I Use Sweetened Applesauce?

It’s better to use unsweetened applesauce to keep the cake from becoming too sweet. You’ll add brown sugar to the batter before preparing the cake to give it the right amount of sweetness.

You don’t need to add anything else to this tasty Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake, but you might want to serve it with vanilla ice cream. You can add toppings to the cake, such as whipped cream, sliced bananas, and even sliced strawberries. Powdered sugar is another great topping to consider sprinkling over your cake.

How to Store the Cake

Cut your cake into individual serving slices, wrap the slices in plastic wrap, and store them in a large container with a lid. You can leave them on the counter for up to three days or put them in the fridge to keep them fresher a bit longer. If you’d like to freeze the cake to preserve it, you can put your slices in the freezer, leaving them there for up to six months.

Description

Prepare a flavorful and traditional dessert using this Big Family Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake recipe. The tasty treat tastes similar to an apple with a slight crunch from the added chopped walnuts.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9×13 baking pan with parchment paper spritzed with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and apple pie spice.

  3. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.  Scrape down the sides and then add the sugar and brown sugar, beating until completely combined.

  4. To the mixing bowl, add the eggs and vanilla. Beat until incorporated. Then add the applesauce and milk, beating until mixed well.

  5. Add the flour mixture to the mixing bowl and beat just until combined.

  6. Fold in the raisins and walnuts.

  7. Transfer the batter to the baking dish and spread evenly.

  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted returns clean.

  9. Cool completely in the baking pan on a wire rack.

  10. Lift the cake from the baking pan using the parchment paper. Gently cut into squares using a serrated knife.

  11. Top with powdered sugar or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Note: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and ½ teaspoon ground cloves may be substituted for the apple pie spice.
