It’s easy to make homemade cornbread from scratch. All you need for this cornbread recipe is flour, yellow or white cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and vegetable shortening.
This recipe for cornbread from scratch will walk you through making 5 packs of homemade cornbread to be ready at a moment’s notice! All you’ll need to do at the baking time is add an egg and milk or buttermilk.

Learn how to make homemade cornbread mix packs! Homemade corn bread is wonderful as muffins, in a cast iron skillet, or on top of your favorite casseroles. Cornbread also goes great with soup and chili. This homemade cornbread recipe makes ahead 5 packs of cornbread mix.
Makes 5 cornbread mixes
- 4 ¼ cups flour
- 4 cups yellow or white cornmeal
- ¾ cup sugar
- ¼ cup baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
To make cornbread:
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk or buttermilk
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Using a fork, pastry blender, or your fingers, cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles sand.
Divide the mix into zip-top freezer bags containing 2 ⅓ cups each.
To make cornbread: Whisk together the egg and milk. Stir in 2 ⅓ cups of cornbread mix just until moistened. Lumps are expected. Transfer the batter into a square baking pan, muffin cups, or cast iron skillet. Bake in a preheated oven at 425 degrees for 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of the cornbread.
