The Ingredients to Prepare the Large Family Instant Pot Hummus

When you are ready to get started with making the Large Family Instant Pot Hummus, make sure that you have these ingredients:

  • Dried Chickpeas. Be sure to sort the chickpeas and then rinse them off before you use them to create hummus.
  • Whole Head Garlic. Remove the skins and smash the garlic down just a bit.
  • Onion. Adding onion to the recipe helps give the hummus even more flavor that will go great with pita chips, vegetables, and much more.
  • Cumin. Using just a bit of cumin is a great way to season your hummus for additional flavor.
  • Lemon Juice. Use the juice from real lemons to add a slight tangy taste to your hummus.

The additional ingredients to add to the Instant Pot when making this hummus include water, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and tahini. You can substitute and add ingredients to your hummus as well.

Ways to Store Hummus After Making It in the Instant Pot

Store the hummus in a large airtight container and keep it in your refrigerator. The hummus can stay fresh in the fridge for up to a week. If you would like to make the hummus in advance and then serve it a few weeks later at a family gathering or special event, you should freeze it. You can place it in the airtight container, label it, and keep it in the freezer for up to six months. Be sure to leave a little room at the top as it will expand when it freezes. Thaw it out by putting it in the refrigerator the night before you plan on serving it. Add Hummus to your weekly meal plan for dinner, snack, or lunch.

Extra Ingredients You Can Add to Your Hummus

Add anything you would like to the Large Family Instant Pot Hummus. If you want to make it spicy, you can add a bit of cajun seasoning or buffalo sauce, depending on what kind of flavor you would like to achieve. Ingredients

  • 2 cup dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans), sorted and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoon salt plus 1 teaspoon salt
  • 16 cups water, divided
  • 2 whole head garlic, skins removed and slightly smashed
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 2 onion, halved
  • 2 teaspoon cumin
  • 4 lemons, juiced
  • 2 cup tahini

 


Instructions

 

  1. Place the chickpeas in a container with a lid. Add 2 tablespoon salt and cover with 8 cups of water. Cover and allow the chickpeas to soak in the refrigerator overnight.

  2. When ready to cook the chickpeas, drain the soaking liquid and rinse the beans well.

  3. Add the chickpeas, bay leaves, the crushed garlic, and onion to the electric pressure cooker.

  4. To the beans, add the remaining 8 cups of water and stir to combine. 

  5. Cover the electric pressure cooker with the valve in the sealing position and program to cook on “manual” or “pressure cook” for 15 minutes. When the cooking cycle is complete, allow the electric pressure cooker to naturally release the pressure. 

  6. Discard the onion and bay leaves. 

  7. Drain the chickpeas over a bowl to retain the cooking liquid. 

  8. Transfer the chickpeas to a food processor and add the ground cumin and lemon juice.  Blend until smooth, adding the cooking liquid as needed to reach your desired consistency. 

  9. Stir the tahini into the hummus. Adjust seasonings if desired.
