Need help planning meals for your large family? Here's a 4-Week Large Family Meal Plan that includes 90 Family Meals, 60 Snacks, Recipes, and Helps for You!

Large Family Meal Plan

For my current once-a-month grocery shopping haul, I had to first create a grocery list based on my easy large family meal planning routine, which slightly adapts and changes over time. As usual, I plan for dinners to be the star of our daily meals. Breakfast and lunches are planned to be kept as simple as possible. Focusing mainly on dinners, I picked 4 large family meals I could do twice (that’s 8 dinners over 4 weeks), and three family favorite themed meals we could do weekly. This means Taco Night, Homemade Pizza Night, and Breakfast for Dinner OR Leftover Night, are happening three out of 7 nights each week. I also picked 4 additional large family recipes to cook up as big weekend meals. When you break it down into manageable steps it’s easy to get a large family 4 week meal plan together.

Large Family Breakfast

    • Scrambled Eggs/Bacon
    • Fried Eggs/Bacon

Large Family Lunches

  • Available Leftovers – usually we have enough leftovers from the previous night’s dinner.

If we’re low on leftovers, have to run out the door for an appointment, or are planning a big day out, we grab some fruit and water bottles and either one of the following:

  • Freezer Peanut Butter/Jelly Sandwiches
  • Freezer Turkey/Cheese Sandwiches

Additional at-home lunch options:

  • Fruit/Yogurt Smoothies
  • Freezer Muffins
  • Freezer Burritos

Large Family Snacks

Fruit and yogurt are our go-to snacks. This month I didn’t get yogurt in our one large once-a-month grocery haul. I plan to pick yogurt up for my one small fill-in grocery haul (coming soon). I don’t let kids wildly grab at snacks. We don’t usually keep a lot of convenience snacks on hand (unless I hit some great deals at the Sharp Shopper grocery outlet). Snack options are allowed as long as it’s not too close to meal time. I also try to add in a protein to help the snack last longer.

Snack Options

    • Bananas
    • Apple w/ spoonful of peanut butter
    • Hard Boiled Eggs
    • Strawberries
    • Watermelon
    • Smoothies (with fruit/yogurt to be purchased in fill-in-haul)

Large Family Dinners

These dinners are being served twice throughout 4-weeks. We serve lots of fruits and veggies as sides available on the table.

  • Slow Cooker Pork Roast with Red Potatoes x2 (I don’t have this recipe on the blog yet, but it’s coming!)

BIG Weekend Dinners

These dinners are our BIG Weekend Dinners. That means I make a large amount of a particular dinner on Saturday. We have it fresh for dinner Saturday night. Then we eat it again after church on Sundays.

Chicken, Broccoli and Rice Casserole|Large Family Style!

Themed Dinner Nights

    • Taco Tuesday Night
    • Homemade Pizza Friday Night
  • Leftover OR Breakfast for Dinner Thursday Night (I leave a night loose to either finish up any leftovers that may be hanging around. If there are no leftovers than it’s an easy Breakfast for Dinner night. This would be something like fried eggs, toast, and some fruit.)

I’m trying to figure out the best way to share my large family meal plans for the month online. So I’m going to quickly show you how to spread the above meals over 4-weeks for a large and growing family who really eats 🙂 This also requires one full freezer cooking day, or two freezer cooking afternoons, to complete the needed French Toast, Pancakes, Muffins, Breads, and on-the-go Sandwiches. You can read more about my freezer cooking days here.

And by this point, it’s time to plan for the next big once-a-month grocery shopping trip! My current once-a-month grocery shopping trip was $620 for our family of nine at Aldi and Walmart. My budget for my fill-in haul is $150. That’s $770 for 4-weeks, which breaks all the way down to $21.38 per family member per week for wholesome and hearty dinners, easy breakfasts, simple lunches, and no-brainer snacks. My older large family grocery budget use to be $1,000 a month, which still breaks down to $27.77 per person/per week – which is pretty good! Since moving we’re close to an Aldi now and at this point, it looks as if shopping mainly at Aldi is going to shave $200-$300 off our grocery budget. So doing a large family 4 week meal plan won’t be so expensive!

  1. Love how Aldi is saving you time and money! We love to shop there and a United Grocery Outlet ,its similar but smaller than your Smart shopper here in Tennessee. God bless you for all your wisdom and encouragement you share with all us other mama’s. Love your blog and vlogs 🙂

  2. We’re a family of 3 but as most of you can relate, our 9 year old boy can eat for 2, sometimes 3 so these videos are extremely helpful on trying to keep on budget! Thanks!!

  3. Do the kids complain about sandwiches for lunch every day or fight over left overs?? Homeschool mom of 9 under 9. Never thought of straight simplifying lunch in this manner. Sounds amazing and easier not to cheat on eating out because of drs appointments and such… Just curious. 🙂

    1. No complaints here. We spent long mornings outside and everyone is always ready for lunch. I’ll mix in smoothies, fruit is also available too. 🙂

  4. Hello. I just found your blog. Very interesting. My question: you do not make or serve any soups at ALL? I think that soups are good for digestive systems, especially childrens. I would consider that addition into the menu for kids.

  5. Love this
I don’t have a big family like you do
Can I still do the same and it would cost me less
Right now I spend about 400-500 for 3 people
    And animals
    Thank you

  6. Don’t you ever get sick of spaghetti and hard boiled eggs? I get that you are trying to save money but food should be enjoyed! So many meals are repeated, often twice in the same day. DOesnt our family get bored? Also what are you putting on the sandwiches? Because deli meat is expensive so I assume you aren’t buying much of that. Is it just peanut butter and jelly, day after day?

    1. Hey there, Erica. Well, what can I say – you don’t have to eat what I make and serve – lucky you! My heart and hope in sharing these posts are to give ideas and tips for moms who are feeding a large and growing family and are limited on time. I hear from many moms that they greatly appreciate my thoughts. If you’re able to spend hours in the kitchen on a daily basis than more power to ya! 🙂

As far as our controversial peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, those do cause quite a stir. We’ll have months and months where we don’t have any PB&Js. Then we’ll have a large family freezer cooking month and I WILL have 7 to 10 loaves of freezer PB&Js made up so we can grab a pack before a big nature hike or add in with a big bag of fruit before a field trip.

In reference to your concern over me buying deli meat, we DO buy a ton of that too. You can watch my grocery hauls on YouTube. We also make up meat/cheese sandwiches for the freezer as well.

Nowhere in this 4-week large family meal plan does it say to eat only hard boiled eggs, spaghetti, and PB&Js every day as you imply. Actually, this large family meal plan mentions spaghetti ONE TIME over 30-days, and turkey and cheese sandwiches are an option. Hard-boiled eggs are a protein pack snack that can go great with a piece of fruit and mentioned as a snack idea option along with several other choices.

      1. Jamerrill, thank you for your meal plans and videos! Our family enjoys watching your family and using your plans as well. Very helpful!Keep up the awesome work!!!:)

      2. If your YouTube videos are any indication of what your kids are actually like, I imagine they’d be thankful and appreciative even if they were served nothing but PB&J, spaghetti, and hard boiled eggs. 😉 Keep up the good work, Jamerrill! (Both in cooking and raising good kids.)

  7. Hey There,
I love this post and plan to try this plan. My issue is that my two older kids literally never stop eating! How do you keep your kiddos from being so hungry? This has been an on going struggle in our home and being a new family of 6 now I know our grocery bill will eventually go up. We could really use some ideas cutting our budget in this area! We don’t have any Aldi’s up here either. Thanks!

    1. Jessica, what about trying to make sure the older kiddos get lots of protein? Protein really helps with hungry kiddos, so that would be cheese sticks, peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, etc. Maybe try apples with peanut butter to dip!

  8. I loved your post. There are only 3 in our family, but your meal ideas sound delicious and I love your suggestions about freezing sandwiches. I want my family to eat better, but with our busy schedule sometimes it’s a challenge. I’m sure these ideas will help us to eat better and save money from not eating at restaurants as often.

    1. Wonderful, Ashley! Don’t forget to sign up for the Free Freezer Meals Planning Pack to also help your food planninghttps://jamerrillstewart.lpages.co/mega-freezer-meals-planning-pack/

  9. I love the idea of a large dish to carry you through the weekend! Going to incorporate something similar for my two college kids while they are home for the summer. Thanks so much for all of your hard work!

  10. We had a limited budget growing up and I recall having only bread and butter for lunches. Jam was a special treat. I’ve not had any issues with that!
