What is apple butter used for?

Apple butter is a highly concentrated form of applesauce. It thickens until the sugars in the apples start to caramelize thus giving it that deep brown color. This thickness makes it a perfect spread for toast, pancakes, english muffins, you name it.

What is the difference between applesauce and apple butter?

Both applesauce and apple butter start with slow cooking apples with sugar, water, and spices, Apple butter is cooked longer allowing the sugars in said apples to caramelize and thicken. In reality, you make apple butter from applesauce.

How long does apple butter last?

In my house, no more than a few days. Store bought apple butter, if kept refrigerated, will keep up to a year. I wouldn’t keep homemade apple butter for more than six months in my refrigerator. I’ve never had it last more than a week.
